Catherine Almonte Da Costa, recently appointed to a key position in the incoming Zohran Mamdani administration, has resigned just a day after her appointment. The resignation follows the resurfacing of several old social media posts in which Da Costa made remarks described as antisemitic and demeaning toward Jewish people. The Anti-Defamation League highlighted these posts, prompting public scrutiny and calls for accountability.
In her statement, Da Costa expressed deep regret for her past comments, apologized to Mayor-elect Mamdani, and acknowledged the pain her words caused. She noted that her statements do not reflect her current beliefs and emphasized her remorse, particularly as the mother of Jewish children. Mayor-elect Mamdani accepted her resignation, stating that the administration was unaware of the posts prior to her appointment.
