Mavis Tire, a national tire and auto service chain, has agreed to pay $304,000 in a settlement after being found to have discriminated against a Jewish job candidate due to his observance of the Sabbath. The candidate requested not to work Friday evenings and Saturdays during his interview for a management role, leading the company to offer him a lower-level position and eventually withdraw the offer when he reiterated his request. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission determined that this conduct violated federal laws prohibiting religious discrimination. As part of the settlement, Mavis Tire will update its religious accommodation policy and provide training to relevant staff on handling such requests.
