Belgium has officially joined South Africa in its case at the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip. The court in The Hague confirmed that Belgium filed a declaration of intervention, adding its support to the ongoing legal proceedings. South Africa initiated the case in December 2023, alleging that Israel's military actions in Gaza violate the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Israel has rejected the allegations, describing them as unfounded and politically motivated. The International Court of Justice previously ordered Israel to take steps to prevent genocidal acts and ensure humanitarian aid reaches Gaza, but did not call for an end to the conflict. Belgium joins a growing list of countries supporting the case, including Nicaragua, Colombia, Mexico, Libya, Bolivia, Turkey, the Maldives, Chile, Spain, Ireland, and Cuba.
