Israel investing more than $100 billion into independent arms industry, Netanyahu reveals

Israel is set to invest over $100 billion in developing an independent arms industry, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed at a recent Air Force graduation ceremony. The initiative aims to reduce Israel's reliance on foreign weapons suppliers, a move prompted by restrictions imposed by allies such as the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany following the events of October 2023. Netanyahu emphasized that the investment will help Israel maintain its military edge and aerial superiority in the region, particularly as other Middle Eastern countries seek advanced fighter jets.

The announcement comes amid increasing international scrutiny of Israel's actions in Gaza and growing calls for arms embargoes from European partners. Netanyahu reiterated the importance of self-reliance for national security, referencing previous statements about Israel's need to become a 'super-Sparta.' While the remarks have sparked debate and market concerns, the government has clarified that the focus is on defense capabilities rather than broader economic isolation.

Israel remains the only country in the Middle East operating F-35 fighter jets, with 45 currently in service and 30 more on order. The prime minister also signaled Israel's intent to prevent regional rivals from acquiring similar advanced weaponry, underscoring the strategic importance of maintaining aerial superiority.
