Israel has become the first country to formally recognise Somaliland as an independent nation, sparking widespread criticism and diplomatic backlash. Somalia's government strongly condemned the move, calling it an unlawful attack on its sovereignty, while the Somali president described it as illegal aggression. The European Union and the United States reaffirmed their support for Somalia's territorial integrity, urging dialogue between Mogadishu and Somaliland. More than twenty countries and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation also rejected Israel's recognition, warning of serious repercussions for peace and stability in the region.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans for immediate cooperation with Somaliland in areas such as agriculture, health, technology, and the economy. Despite Somaliland's effective autonomy since declaring independence in 1991, most of the international community continues to recognise it as part of Somalia. The controversy comes amid broader concerns about regional security and the potential impact on international peace.
