Jews in New York City were targeted in more hate crimes than all other groups combined for the second consecutive year, according to new police data. Despite an overall decrease in hate crimes and antisemitic incidents, anti-Jewish attacks accounted for 57% of all reported hate crimes in 2025, even though Jewish New Yorkers make up only about 10% of the city's population. Jewish community groups have expressed disappointment with Mayor Zohran Mamdani's recent executive order repealing previous definitions of antisemitism, though they welcomed continued efforts to combat antisemitism and protect houses of worship. Governor Kathy Hochul announced plans to introduce new state protections, including safety zones around synagogues and other religious sites, in her upcoming address.
