As Greenland stands up to Trump, president says anything short of US control 'unacceptable'

US President Donald Trump has renewed calls for the United States to acquire Greenland, insisting that anything short of American control is unacceptable and urging the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to support the effort. Trump claims that Greenland is vital for national security and warns that if the US does not act, Russia or China might. Residents and officials in Greenland and Denmark have firmly rejected the idea, emphasizing that the territory is not for sale and reaffirming their commitment to Denmark and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Danish and Greenlandic leaders have publicly pushed back, with Greenland's prime minister stating their allegiance to Denmark and the European Union. The White House has not ruled out taking the island by force, heightening tensions and anxiety among Greenlanders. US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were scheduled to meet with Danish and Greenlandic officials in Washington to discuss the situation.

Meanwhile, bipartisan legislation has been introduced in the US Congress to prohibit any attempt to annex Greenland or any territory of a North Atlantic Treaty Organization member without consent. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization Secretary-General has declined to comment on the dispute, stressing the alliance's focus on Arctic security.
