Learning Hebrew in bomb shelters: How Dnipro Jewry endures Russian invasion

Dnipro's Jewish community has faced immense challenges since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with daily life disrupted by missile attacks and frequent air raid sirens. Schools and kindergartens have adapted by building bomb shelters, allowing children to continue their studies and maintain a sense of normalcy despite the ongoing conflict. The community has shrunk as many have fled, but those who remain have found new ways to reconnect with their heritage, adding Hebrew and Jewish studies to their curriculum and receiving support from Jewish organizations abroad.

Medical and social institutions, such as the Jewish Medical Center and the local old age home, have provided critical aid not only to Jews but also to non-Jewish refugees and victims of the war. Despite the hardships, leaders like Chief Rabbi Shmuel Kaminetsky and community director Zelig Brez remain optimistic, believing that the war will eventually end and that the community will rebuild and flourish. The resilience and spirit of Dnipro's Jews are evident in their determination to hold onto hope and continue their traditions even in the face of adversity.
