Stephanie Silkowski, recently appointed as head of the Mayor's Office of Appointments by New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani, has come under scrutiny for her past social media activity supporting the Defund the Police movement and police abolition. Silkowski, a longtime figure in left-wing New York politics and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, deleted her X account before her appointment became public, following a pattern seen with other Mamdani appointees whose past posts sparked controversy.
Silkowski previously advocated for significant reductions to the police budget, praised candidates with abolitionist platforms, and pushed for progressive policies such as universal child care, public ownership of utilities, and the elimination of student and medical debt. She also played a key role in securing city funding for undocumented children during the 2022 migrant crisis.
Her appointment comes after similar controversies involving other members of Mamdani's administration, some of whom also deleted social media posts before taking office. Silkowski has openly discussed her passion for politics, her student debt, and her commitment to left-wing causes, but has not commented publicly on the recent revelations.
