India-US deal: Russia contradicts Trump, says New Delhi has not said it will halt oil purchases - The Times of India

Russia has denied claims by United States President Donald Trump that India has agreed to stop purchasing Russian oil as part of a new trade deal between New Delhi and Washington. The Kremlin stated it has not received any official communication from India regarding a halt in Russian oil imports, contradicting Trump's assertion that Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to shift purchases to the United States and Venezuela.

While the trade deal includes a reduction in United States tariffs on Indian goods, Prime Minister Modi's public statements have not mentioned any commitment to end Russian oil imports. Indian refiners and government officials have indicated that any move away from Russian crude would require a transition period to honor existing contracts, and no directive has been issued to halt purchases.

India, which became the largest buyer of discounted Russian oil after the start of the Ukraine war, has already reduced imports but remains reliant on Russian supplies, especially for certain refineries. The government is diversifying its sources, increasing imports from the Middle East, Africa, and South America, but industry sources say a sudden stop in Russian oil could disrupt operations.

Despite pressure from the United States and ongoing trade negotiations, Indian refiners are seeking clear guidance from the government on future policy, with some temporarily pausing Russian oil purchases while awaiting official instructions.
