Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara has called on the High Court of Justice to urgently review the government's proposed Broadcasting Law, warning that the legislative process was severely compromised and threatens press freedom in Israel. In her submission, Baharav-Miara argued the Communications Ministry bypassed essential legal and professional checks, advancing a sweeping reform without proper vetting or internal approval. She highlighted that the bill, which would overhaul regulation of television, radio, and online news, was presented to lawmakers without key safeguards for media independence or diversity, and that its rushed process has already created a chilling effect on journalistic freedom. The attorney-general stopped short of demanding the bill's immediate annulment, instead urging the court to pause Knesset deliberations so the government can address procedural flaws and complete necessary legal reviews. The High Court has not yet scheduled a hearing on the matter.
