Fourteen migrants lost their lives in the Aegean Sea after their boat collided with a coast guard vessel near the island of Chios, according to Greek authorities. The incident occurred as the coast guard attempted to intercept a dinghy carrying migrants from Turkey, resulting in a fatal collision. Two coast guard officers were injured, and 24 migrants were rescued, while search and rescue operations continue for others who may have been on board.
Greece has been a key entry point for migrants and refugees seeking to reach Europe, though arrivals have decreased in recent years due to stricter border controls. The country has faced criticism over its handling of migrants, with ongoing investigations into alleged human rights violations. Greek officials maintain that they do not violate human rights or forcibly return asylum seekers.
