New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has filled key positions in his administration with individuals known for their anti-Israel activism. Among them is Alvaro Lopez, appointed as Brooklyn borough director, who previously praised those tearing down posters of Israeli hostages and advocated for a 'socialist strategy for Palestinian solidarity.' Drashti Brahmbhatt, an adviser for planning and implementation, has a history of leading college divestment campaigns and making inflammatory statements about Israel and other political issues.
Other hires include Manvir Singh, a senior policy analyst who accused Israel of terrorism and supported controversial figures, and Achmat Akkad, a community engagement specialist arrested for pro-Hamas agitation. The administration has also seen the creation of a 'Global Oppression Working Group' that calls for boycotts of companies doing business in Israel. The replacement of the executive director of the Mayor's Office to Combat Antisemitism with a left-wing activist has raised concerns among Jewish community leaders.
These appointments highlight a growing presence of anti-Israel sentiment within city government, sparking criticism and concern from various groups. Mayor Mamdani and his staff have declined to comment on the controversy.
