Leavitt says Trump chooses diplomacy first for Iran, but remains 'willing to use' lethal force if necessary

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump prefers diplomacy in dealing with Iran but is prepared to use military force if necessary. She emphasized that Trump is the ultimate decision maker and that his first option is always a diplomatic solution.

Her comments followed Trump’s warning that it would be a very bad day for Iran if it fails to reach an agreement over its nuclear program. Trump has said he is considering a limited military strike to pressure Iranian leaders, while also stating he would rather secure a deal than escalate conflict.

The administration has increased its military presence in the Middle East, deploying the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford and its strike group to the region, where the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln and guided missile destroyers are already operating. Trump also criticized what he called inaccurate reporting about a potential war, reiterating that any final decision rests with him.
