Jerusalem Municipality officials have approved adding the name of Shira Banki to the city's official names registry and have given initial approval for a memorial near the site where she was killed during the 2015 Jerusalem Pride Parade. The exact location of the memorial will be determined according to municipal procedures.
Banki was 15 when she was fatally stabbed at the parade, where six others were also wounded in an attack carried out by a man previously convicted of a similar assault. Her family said she attended the march out of a belief in human rights, tolerance, and acceptance. Following her death, her parents established the Derech Shira Banki nonprofit to promote moderation, tolerance, and respectful public discourse in Israel.
Her father said that in the years since the attack, public discourse in Israel and other democracies has grown more heated and less able to handle complexity. Community leaders welcomed the decision, calling the memorial a meaningful way to honor her memory and a reminder that violence has no place in Jerusalem.
