United States Vice Admiral Fred Kacher has been removed from his role as director of the Joint Staff just months after assuming the position in December, according to sources familiar with the decision. A spokesperson confirmed that Kacher will return to duty with the United States Navy, but no official reason was provided for his departure.

One source indicated that he was not considered the right fit for the role, though no specific incident was cited as the cause. General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, expressed gratitude for Kacher’s service and contributions to the Joint Staff.

The director of the Joint Staff is a senior three star position that provides key support to the chairman and is often a pathway to higher command. Kacher previously held several prominent naval assignments, including leadership of the Seventh Fleet and the United States Naval Academy.

His removal comes amid broader leadership changes at the Pentagon, including last year’s dismissal of the previous chairman by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The shakeup occurs as the United States prepares for a potential military buildup in the Middle East and diplomatic talks with Iran over its nuclear program.
