President Donald Trump has ordered federal agencies to halt the use of artificial intelligence technology developed by Anthropic, disrupting the company’s growing role in national security and intelligence work. Anthropic had been the first advanced artificial intelligence lab to deploy its models on classified government networks through Amazon Web Services and to create customized systems for national security clients.
Its Claude system has been used across parts of the intelligence community and the armed services. The move reflects ongoing tensions between Washington and major technology firms, echoing earlier disputes such as the 2018 employee protests at Google over defense contracts, after which several large technology companies expanded their military partnerships and pledged closer cooperation with the Trump administration.
