President Donald Trump has ordered all federal agencies to immediately stop using software developed by Anthropic, the company behind the Claude artificial intelligence model. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the government would no longer do business with the firm and announced a six month phase out period for agencies such as the Department of War that currently rely on its products. He warned of major civil and criminal consequences if the company does not cooperate during the transition.

Trump said the decision was driven by what he described as the company’s left wing policies, accusing it of trying to force the Department of War to follow its terms of service rather than the Constitution. He argued that the company’s restrictions were putting American troops and national security at risk.

The clash stems from disputes over how the software could be used by the federal government. Anthropic has sought limits to prevent its technology from being used for mass surveillance of Americans or fully autonomous weapons, while defense officials reportedly pushed for broader authority covering weapons development, intelligence collection, and battlefield operations. The disagreement intensified after reports that the software was involved through a partnership with another firm in an operation targeting former Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro. Defense officials are now exploring alternative contracts with other technology companies to replace Anthropic’s systems if necessary.
