Starmer is cautious on Iran because he knows the chaos Trump's strikes could trigger

Sir Keir Starmer has adopted a cautious stance following air strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel, resisting pressure from both sides of British politics. While some on the left have urged him to label the action illegal and others on the right have called for full support, he has sought a careful middle ground shaped by the Labour Party's history with the Iraq war.

The Prime Minister stressed that British military activity in the region is strictly defensive and compliant with international law, and that the United Kingdom was not involved in the strikes. He is also understood to have previously blocked the use of British bases for the operation over legal concerns. At the same time, he strongly condemned Iran's leadership, describing it as a threat domestically and regionally.

Although he did not explicitly endorse President Donald Trump's decision to carry out the strikes, he signalled agreement with the broader objective of curbing Iran's weapons programmes and destabilising actions. He stopped short of supporting calls for regime change, instead urging Iran to end violence and repression.

Starmer's approach reflects a desire to preserve relations with the White House while avoiding deeper military entanglement. Critics accuse him of fence-sitting, but allies argue he is weighing the legal, moral and geopolitical risks of further escalation in an already volatile region.
