Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader for 36 years, has been killed at the age of 86 in airstrikes by Israel and the United States that destroyed his central Tehran compound. His death follows decades of escalating confrontation over Iran’s nuclear program and regional ambitions, culminating in open warfare and repeated warnings from Washington and Jerusalem. Diplomatic efforts to curb Iran’s uranium enrichment collapsed shortly before the strikes.

Rising unexpectedly to power in 1989 after the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Khamenei consolidated authority over Iran’s political, military and judicial institutions. Internationally, Khamenei defined Iran as a leading adversary of the United States and Israel. He expanded Tehran’s influence by backing allied militias and armed groups across the Middle East, investing billions to counter Israeli and American power. While he supported the 2015 nuclear agreement, he remained deeply hostile to Washington, especially after sanctions were reimposed in 2018. In his final years, Iran’s regional alliances weakened under sustained Israeli military pressure.

Khamenei’s death leaves Iran facing profound uncertainty, battered by military conflict abroad and growing frustration at home. Younger Iranians in particular have questioned the costs of confrontation and isolation, as the Islamic Republic confronts a future without the man who shaped its direction for more than three decades.
