US-Israel strike Iran: With homeland under attack, Iran women chase FIFA World Cup dream | Football News - The Times of India

Iran's women's national football team has received assurances of support as it competes in the Women's Asian Cup in Australia, following military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran that reportedly killed supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The 26-member squad arrived on the Gold Coast just days before the attacks and is set to open its campaign against South Korea.

The Asian Football Confederation said it is closely monitoring developments and remains in regular contact with the team, stressing that the safety and welfare of players and officials is its top priority. Head coach Marziyeh Jafari, speaking ahead of the tournament opener, kept her focus on football and expressed hope that her players would demonstrate their progress after months of preparation.

Iran is making its second consecutive appearance at the continental tournament after debuting in 2022, where the team gained recognition at home despite early defeats. Captain Zahra Ghanbari said the squad aims to secure one of the six qualification spots available for the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil, emphasizing the team's determination despite being drawn in a challenging group.
