MARK ALMOND: Ali Khamenei's dead hand remains on Iran's tiller

Ali Hosseini Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader for more than four decades, has reportedly been killed after Israeli airstrikes destroyed his compound in Tehran. State media described his death as 'martyrdom', but it follows years of escalating conflict with Israel and mounting international pressure over Iran's nuclear ambitions. His rule was marked by harsh repression at home and an unwavering hostility toward Israel abroad.

Rising from modest clerical roots, Khamenei became a close ally of revolutionary leader Ruhollah Khomeini and steadily consolidated power after the 1979 revolution. Surviving assassination attempts and political rivalries, he assumed the role of Supreme Leader in 1989. Under his leadership, dissent was repeatedly crushed, including major protest movements in 2009 and 2022, while the Revolutionary Guard forces enforced strict social and political controls.

In later years, corruption, declining religious observance, and allegations of deep Israeli intelligence penetration exposed vulnerabilities within the regime. After last year's conflict with Israel and the United States, Khamenei faced internal criticism and carried out purges of suspected spies. His death now raises fears of a destabilizing power struggle, though loyalists may seek to preserve the system he built, leaving his influence lingering over Iran's uncertain future.
