An expanding body of research indicates that diet plays a significant role in mental health, particularly during times of crisis. Studies show that maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet can help reduce anxiety, improve mood and lower the risk of depression, making food choices especially important during emergencies.
A recent Israeli study published in 2025 in the journal 'Foods' analyzed sleep patterns, processed food consumption, sleep quality and symptoms of anxiety and depression among 303 adults. The findings revealed that participants who followed a Mediterranean-style diet rich in vegetables, legumes, fish, olive oil and whole grains reported fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression, highlighting the strong connection between nutrition and emotional well-being.
