Israel carried out an airstrike on a building in Qom used by Iran's Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for appointing and overseeing the country's supreme leader. The strike came days after Israel killed former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, as senior clerics were reportedly gathering to choose his successor.
Iranian state-affiliated media described the attack as targeting the Assembly of Experts, while an Israeli defense source confirmed the air force struck the location where clerics had convened. Footage from local outlets showed the building heavily damaged, though there were no immediate reports of casualties. Another news agency claimed the structure was old and not used for official meetings.
The strike followed earlier reported attacks on the assembly's main headquarters in Tehran. Iran has announced a transition process that includes the formation of an interim leadership council made up of the president, the head of the judiciary, and a jurist from the Guardian Council. The council, alongside senior security officials, will govern temporarily until a new supreme leader is appointed.
