A Toronto synagogue was struck by gunfire on the first night of Purim, leaving visible damage to the building but no reported injuries. Police responded late Monday evening to reports of shots fired at Temple Emanu-El and discovered multiple bullet holes in the front windows. Authorities have launched an investigation and increased patrols in the surrounding area.
The investigation is being led by a specialized gun and gang task force in coordination with the city’s hate crime unit. Officials have not identified a suspect. The attack took place just hours after the congregation had gathered to celebrate the Jewish holiday.
Political leaders across Canada condemned the shooting as an act of antisemitism. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow described it as an unacceptable act of hatred and intimidation, while Ontario Premier Doug Ford called it a vile and targeted attack on the Jewish community. Federal Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree and opposition leader Pierre Poilievre also expressed concern and pledged support for Jewish communities facing rising threats.
Images of the damaged windows circulated online, intensifying calls for stronger protections for Jewish institutions. Authorities continue to investigate the incident and have vowed to hold those responsible accountable.
