For more than two decades, Iran has relied in part on Hezbollah’s involvement in narcotics trafficking across the Americas to help finance its broader regional and global ambitions. Investigations by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and the Department of the Treasury have described Hezbollah as both a militant organization and a transnational criminal network, generating a significant share of its roughly one billion dollar annual budget through illicit activity. While Iran supplies most of the group’s funding, criminal enterprises such as drug trafficking, weapons smuggling, illicit timber, and human trafficking account for an estimated thirty percent, with narcotics forming the largest share.

Testimony before the United States Senate in 2025 highlighted Hezbollah’s longstanding role in laundering drug proceeds in Latin America. One major case exposed a network that allegedly laundered up to two hundred million dollars per month for Mexican and Colombian cartels. United States authorities have identified a specialized unit within Hezbollah dedicated to these activities, linking senior operatives to partnerships with South American cocaine suppliers that serve markets in Europe and North America.

Recent assessments by the Department of the Treasury and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network indicate that Hezbollah has used complex money laundering systems spanning Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, including black market currency exchanges and bulk cash smuggling. The group has also profited from smuggling Iranian oil and liquefied petroleum gas in coordination with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Qods Force and allied networks. Officials warn that these criminal financing mechanisms strengthen Iran’s proxy strategy, sustain militant operations, and pose risks to Western financial systems and regional stability.
