President Donald Trump told Congress it is too early to determine the full scope of the recent military strikes against Iran, as hostilities between the two nations intensify. The United States and Israel began striking Iranian targets on Saturday, prompting Iran to respond with missiles and drones aimed at Middle Eastern countries allied with the United States.
In a letter to Senate President Pro Tempore Chuck Grassley, Trump described Iran as one of the world's leading state sponsors of terrorism and warned that it continues to pursue nuclear weapons capabilities. He said Iran's missile arsenal poses a direct threat to United States forces, commercial vessels and civilians, as well as to American allies and partners.
Trump stated that no United States ground forces have been deployed and that the operation was designed to limit civilian casualties. However, Democratic lawmakers and some Republicans have questioned whether the president violated the law by launching the strikes without congressional approval, urging Congress to vote on further military action.
