French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has published a provocative cover depicting a toilet placed on a pile of rubble, with Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei portrayed inside the bowl. His signature turban rests on the toilet tank, while his eyes and glasses peer out from within, signaling a mocking reference to his death.
The illustration was created by the magazine’s editor in chief, Laurent Sourisseau, known as Riss. He is a survivor of the January 7, 2015 attack on the publication’s Paris newsroom.
That assault was carried out by brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi, who pledged allegiance to Al Qaeda. The attackers said the massacre, which left 12 people dead and 11 wounded, was retaliation for the magazine’s cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.
