Seventy four retired United States generals and admirals have signed an open letter backing joint United States and Israeli military strikes against Iran, describing the campaign as a necessary response to decades of threats against American forces, allies and regional stability. The letter, published by the Jewish Institute for National Security of America, argues that Iran has long endangered United States troops and supported militant groups across the Middle East.
The endorsement comes as the conflict intensifies, with the Secretary of War stating that a United States submarine recently sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean, the first such sinking by torpedo since the Second World War. He also said American and Israeli forces are moving to establish full control of Iranian airspace as part of operations aimed at dismantling Iran’s missile, air defense and nuclear infrastructure.
The retired commanders contend that Iran has continued expanding its missile programs, rebuilding nuclear capabilities and backing proxy forces in several countries despite previous military setbacks. They argue close coordination between the United States, Israel and regional partners is essential to weaken the Iranian government’s military capacity and deter further aggression.
However, international leaders and several Democratic lawmakers have raised concerns that the strikes could escalate into a broader regional conflict. Critics question whether there is clear evidence of an immediate threat and warn that the operation risks becoming a wider war without a defined strategic end state.
