The United States Department of Justice has charged a Pakistani national, Asif Merchant, with plotting to assassinate prominent American political figures, including President Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Prosecutors allege that Merchant, who they say had ties to Iran, attempted to hire two hitmen for 5,000 dollars in 2024. The supposed assassins were undercover agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
According to court documents, Merchant told investigators that an Iranian handler directed him to travel to the United States and possibly arrange a हत्या. He claimed the handler mentioned Donald Trump, Joe Biden and Nikki Haley as potential targets. Merchant was secretly recorded outlining a plan to kill an unnamed politician and later offered payment to individuals he believed would carry out the attack.
During court proceedings, Merchant said he acted under threats against his family members in Iran and feared for their safety. He testified that the handler indicated knowledge of his relatives' identities and locations, leaving him feeling he had no choice but to comply. Authorities described the alleged plot as a serious national security threat amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran.
