Iraqi women's rights activist Yanar Mohammed was shot and killed outside her home in Baghdad by two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle. She was taken to hospital but died from her wounds. Her organization confirmed her death, mourning the loss of a prominent leader in the struggle for women's rights.

Mohammed co-founded and led the Organization of Women's Freedom in Iraq and opened the country's first women's shelter in 2003. Over more than two decades, she helped save thousands of women from so-called honor killings, domestic violence, and sex trafficking, often operating secret safe houses despite repeated death threats.

Human rights advocates described her killing as a targeted attack aimed at silencing defenders of women's rights. International rights groups and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights have called for a prompt, thorough, and impartial investigation, warning that a climate of impunity has left activists at grave risk amid a broader erosion of protections for women and girls in Iraq.
