Frederick Haynes the Third, a Dallas pastor and longtime mentor to Representative Jasmine Crockett, won the Democratic primary for Texas's 30th Congressional District with more than 72 percent of the vote, according to the Associated Press. Because the district has reliably supported Democrats for years, he is widely expected to win the general election and succeed Crockett in the House of Representatives.
Haynes has drawn attention for outspoken sermons and public remarks supporting reparations for Black Americans. In past speeches, he argued that the United States was founded in violence and injustice and said the nation must 'pay us what you owe us' to achieve redemption. He has also participated in rallies calling for reparations and has framed the issue as essential to addressing historic exploitation and discrimination.
The pastor has faced criticism for past comments on Israel and for praising Louis Farrakhan in a social media post. Following the October 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas, Haynes blamed Israeli policies for the violence. He has also made controversial remarks about political violence and prominent conservative figures. Haynes campaigned on progressive priorities similar to those championed by Crockett, including government funded health care for all, abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and raising the minimum wage.
