Iran warns US will 'bitterly regret' torpedoing warship

Iran's leadership has warned that the United States will 'bitterly regret' sinking an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean, an attack that killed at least 87 sailors. Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi described the strike as 'an atrocity at sea' and said the vessel had been traveling in international waters as a guest of India's navy.

A senior cleric, Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi Amoli, escalated tensions by calling for violence against President Donald Trump and Israel, declaring that Iran was facing a great test. His remarks came as the United States and Israel continued a campaign launched over the weekend targeting Iran's leadership, missile capabilities and nuclear program, with shifting signals about the conflict's ultimate goals.

The fighting has spread across the region, with missile alerts in Israel, reported strikes on bases hosting American forces, and attacks linked to Iranian-backed groups in Lebanon. Explosions have been reported in Tehran, and violence has affected shipping routes critical to global energy supplies, pushing oil prices sharply higher.

More than 1,000 people have been reported killed in Iran, along with dozens in Lebanon and around a dozen in Israel. The conflict has disrupted international travel, threatened commercial shipping lanes, and drawn in neighboring countries as instability ripples across the Middle East.
