Fears are rising that the conflict involving Iran could widen into a global war, with concerns that the United Kingdom may not remain insulated. Although the likelihood of a direct strike on British soil is considered low, security experts warn that Iranian Shahed drones could potentially be launched from vessels in the North Sea, targeting critical infrastructure and military sites.
Each drone carries a powerful high explosive payload capable of collapsing buildings on impact. Experts say the safest place during an attack would be underground shelters, with deep London Underground stations offering strong protection. If underground shelter is not accessible, people should move indoors immediately and take cover in the lowest part of a sturdy building.
Safety guidance from the World Health Organisation advises staying away from windows, doors and corridors, which can channel dangerous shockwaves and flying glass. The safest position indoors is in a corner of a room with thick walls and few openings, without leaning against walls. Covering exposed skin, closing eyes, and slightly opening the mouth during a blast can help reduce injury.
Authorities also recommend preparing to shelter for an extended period by storing water and reinforcing safe spaces with heavy furniture or mattresses. Ultimately, experts suggest that rural and remote areas far from likely targets would offer the greatest safety in the event of a drone strike.
