US asks Ukraine for assistance in shooting down Iranian Shahed drones in Middle East

The United States has asked Ukraine for assistance in countering Iranian-designed Shahed drones in the Middle East, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Kyiv has developed low-cost interceptor drones during Russia's invasion, designed to destroy incoming attack drones mid-air, and has gained significant operational experience defending its cities and infrastructure.

Zelensky said he approved the deployment of Ukrainian experts and necessary resources to support protection efforts in the region. He previously предложed that Middle Eastern partners exchange air defense missiles for Ukrainian interceptor technology, arguing that the systems would offer more effective protection against Iranian drone attacks.

Discussions are also underway between Ukraine, the United States, and Qatar regarding the possible acquisition of Ukrainian drone interception systems. These talks involve government officials and include technology capable of detecting incoming drones and disrupting their communication signals. Meanwhile, Zelensky has held conversations with leaders in Bahrain and Kuwait, both recently targeted by Iranian attacks.

Despite requesting assistance, President Donald Trump criticized Zelensky, accusing him of delaying efforts to negotiate an end to the war with Russia. Trump said he would accept help from any country but reiterated frustration over the pace of peace negotiations, as fighting between Russia and Ukraine continues.
