A Chabad House in Playa Venao, Panama, has developed a structured retreat model to support Israeli combat veterans struggling to reintegrate after war. What began as hospitality for post-service travelers evolved into an organized, research-backed program after the October 7 attacks, when many soldiers arrived carrying unprocessed trauma, emotional numbness, insomnia, and isolation. Recognizing that warmth alone was insufficient, local leaders built Retreat Lochamim as a disciplined healing framework grounded in community, routine, and professional guidance.

Held in a secluded coastal compound, the six-day retreat combines group processing circles, meditation, breathwork, surfing, and other body-based practices within a strictly substance-free environment. The program emphasizes sequence and containment, beginning with trust-building among participants who share similar service backgrounds. Academic research from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev is studying the retreat as a unified trauma recovery model, examining how structured discussion followed by physical activity can help regulate the nervous system and rebuild trust.

Since launching, the retreat has hosted more than 150 combat veterans across multiple cycles, with demand far exceeding available spaces. Alumni continue with monthly gatherings in Israel to sustain progress, and specialized retreats have expanded to include women combat soldiers and young widows. Supported by the local Jewish community and Israeli partners, the initiative is now exploring ways to replicate the model globally through existing Jewish infrastructure.

Organizers view the retreat not as a replacement for Israel’s mental health system but as a complementary response to a growing national need for distance, containment, and community-based healing. As Israel faces a prolonged period of recovery, the Playa Venao model offers a structured blueprint for helping combat veterans rebuild trust, reconnect with themselves, and return to civilian life with renewed stability and direction.
