The administration of President Donald Trump has invoked emergency authority to bypass Congress and approve a $650 million weapons sale to Israel, according to two United States officials cited by Reuters. The State Department said Secretary of State Marco Rubio determined that an emergency justified waiving the congressional review process typically required for such transactions.
The package includes more than 20,000 bombs, among them 12,000 1,000 pound general purpose bomb bodies requested by Israel, as well as 500 pound general purpose bombs added as an amendment to a previous sale. The principal contractor for the deal is Repkon United States, based in Texas. Israel is also expected to purchase an additional $298 million in munitions through direct commercial sales.
The decision comes one week after the United States and Israel launched a joint air campaign against Iran. Democratic Representative Gregory Meeks criticized the move to bypass congressional oversight, calling it a sign of poor preparation.
