International Women's Day: Quiet revolution of the haredi economy

New data published ahead of International Women's Day point to a significant economic shift within Israel's haredi community, with women now earning higher hourly wages on average than men. In 2023, haredi women earned about 76 shekels per hour, compared with roughly 71 shekels for haredi men, marking a reversal of past trends.

The change reflects a long-term narrowing of wage gaps. In 2005, haredi women earned only about 72 percent of what haredi men made, but by 2023 that figure had risen to roughly 95 percent. Despite this progress, haredi women still earn less on average than non-haredi Jewish women, whose hourly wages stand at about 89 shekels.

On a monthly basis, haredi men still earn slightly more overall, largely because women tend to work fewer hours. However, in cities such as Bnei Brak and Modiin Illit, women already outpace men in monthly earnings. Researchers say the findings signal a broader structural change, with economic influence in the haredi community gradually shifting toward women.
