Putin offers 'unwavering support' to Iran's new supreme leader

Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged 'unwavering support' to Iran's new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, following his appointment after the killing of his father in United States and Israeli strikes. In a message to Tehran, Putin said Russia would remain a reliable partner and reaffirmed solidarity as Iran confronts what he described as armed aggression. He also reiterated calls for an immediate ceasefire and a return to political and diplomatic solutions.

Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, was selected by Iran's Assembly of Experts and now assumes sweeping authority as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, with control over military leadership and war strategy. China also voiced support for Iran's decision, opposing foreign interference and warning against threats to the new leader.

Tensions escalated further after Israel's defense minister threatened to target any successor continuing hostile policies, while United States President Donald Trump said Iran's next leader would require his approval to last. As the conflict enters its second week, exchanges of strikes have intensified across the region, with casualties reported in Bahrain, Israel, and Lebanon, and both sides signaling little willingness to back down.
