South Korea’s president said some United States air defense systems stationed on the Korean Peninsula could be redeployed to the Middle East as the war with Iran intensifies. He acknowledged that Seoul cannot prevent Washington from moving its own military assets, despite domestic opposition, but said South Korea’s defenses remain strong enough to deter North Korea.
Reports indicate that components of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system may be shifting from South Korea to the Middle East, though it is unclear which parts are involved. The system, first deployed to South Korea in 2017, is a key element of the peninsula’s missile defense network and is designed to intercept short-, medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles.
The United States Army operates only a limited number of these systems worldwide, making any redeployment significant. Analysts warn that sustained operations in the conflict with Iran are consuming interceptor supplies and could strain long-term missile defense readiness if replenishment does not keep pace with demand.
