Argentina President Javier Milei’s strong public support for Israel drew fresh attention this week after a popular Argentine streamer criticized his repeated visits to the country and his visible displays of religious devotion. During a live broadcast, Tomás Rebord mocked Milei’s emotional response to visiting the Western Wall and questioned why he travels to Israel frequently, while also suggesting without evidence that Jews were linked to recent wildfires in Patagonia.
Milei, who has described himself as deeply supportive of Israel and has expressed interest in converting to Judaism, was in New York for a three day investment event promoting Argentina. While there, he visited the gravesite of a prominent Jewish spiritual leader, attended events with Jewish organizations, and spoke at Yeshiva University, where he called himself the most Zionist president in the world.
Following Rebord’s remarks, lawyer Jorge Monastersky filed a criminal complaint in Argentina alleging religious discrimination. He argued that blaming Jews collectively for disasters and ridiculing religious symbols goes beyond free expression and fuels antisemitism. Milei publicly praised the legal action, as Argentina’s government has taken a tougher stance against antisemitism and anti Israel rhetoric under his leadership.
