Russia declined to back a resolution at the United Nations Security Council that demanded Iran halt its attacks on Gulf nations, describing the proposal as extremely unbalanced. Moscow argued that the draft failed to acknowledge earlier strikes on Tehran that it said provoked the current escalation.
In response, Russia introduced its own resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire. However, the measure did not receive enough support to pass, with backing limited to China, Pakistan and Somalia.
Several countries criticised Russia’s stance, accusing it of hypocrisy given its ongoing war in Ukraine. The contentious debate underscored deepening geopolitical divisions as the Middle East conflict expands and the Security Council struggles to present a unified response.
