Rabbi Daniel Korobkin of Beth Avraham Yosef of Toronto spoke out after a late night shooting targeted his synagogue following a community dinner. No one was injured, as the building was empty at the time, but he said the attack appeared intended to intimidate and has left congregants shaken.
He described a growing sense of unease among Jewish communities in Canada, saying the country no longer feels as safe as it once did. Many community members are now hesitant to openly display their Jewish identity in public, reflecting broader tensions and rising fear.
Despite the incident, Rabbi Korobkin emphasized resilience and pride within the community, noting their strong connection to Israel and the challenges faced there. He also revealed his own plans to immigrate to Israel and predicted that more Canadian Jews may follow.
The rabbi called for stronger action from government officials and law enforcement while expressing gratitude for solidarity shown by other communities, including religious Christians and members of the Iranian diaspora.
