A gunman drove a car through the doors of the Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, on Thursday, where 140 children were inside an early childhood centre. The man, armed with a rifle, exchanged gunfire with security personnel before being shot dead. The vehicle caught fire during the incident, prompting a large police response.
Authorities said none of the children, teachers, or staff were injured. One security officer was struck by the vehicle and knocked unconscious but did not suffer life-threatening injuries. Investigators have not yet identified the suspect or determined a motive.
The synagogue praised its security team for stopping the attacker and said staff followed safety procedures to keep children calm and protected. President Donald Trump expressed support for the Michigan Jewish community, calling the incident 'a terrible thing.'
