Armed agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation executed a search warrant at a home in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, hours after a deadly attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. Video showed agents breaking a front window to enter the brick residence as part of an investigation believed to be connected to the synagogue assault.
Authorities said 41-year-old Ayman Mohamad Ghazali allegedly rammed a vehicle into the synagogue around midday and opened fire on security guards with a rifle. Armed security returned fire, killing him at the scene. The vehicle caught fire, filling the building with smoke and forcing the evacuation of staff and 140 students. A chemical agent was reportedly found inside the truck, though officials have not identified the substance.
At least eight first responders were treated at a local hospital, and about 30 officers were hospitalized for smoke inhalation after entering the building. One security guard was struck by the suspect's vehicle. Federal authorities, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are assisting in the investigation, and the president was briefed on the incident.
Local officials said the suspect was a Dearborn Heights resident who had recently lost several family members in an Israeli strike in Lebanon. He entered the United States in 2011 on a spousal immigrant visa and became a citizen in 2016. The mayor condemned the attack and urged residents to remain vigilant during the final days of Ramadan.
