Or Shaku, 26, is the only woman working as an optical fiber splicer on an infrastructure team at a major Israeli telecommunications company. Based in central Israel, she handles delicate fiber cables and critical repairs, often under the pressure of emergency sirens.
For the past year and a half, she has worked around the clock maintaining and restoring essential communications infrastructure for hospitals, banks, police, the military and other vital services. Her role requires precision and resilience, especially during periods of heightened tension.
Shaku says her work is meaningful not only when supporting national institutions but also when reconnecting families. Whether helping grandparents speak with grandchildren or restoring a child’s internet connection, she sees firsthand the impact of her efforts, underscoring her belief that women can perform the job just as well, and sometimes better, than men.
