The administration of President Donald Trump is preparing to announce a coalition of countries that will escort commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. Officials are still deciding whether to launch operations before or after ongoing hostilities involving Iran conclude. The White House declined to comment on the planned announcement.
President Trump said the United States, along with several affected nations, would send warships to keep the vital waterway open and safe following what he described as Iran's attempted closure of the strait. He cited countries including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom as being impacted and expressed hope they would contribute naval support.
The move comes as energy companies warn that continued disruptions in the strait could drive oil prices higher in the United States and globally. While the administration is working with energy firms to stabilize markets, industry leaders say reopening the Strait of Hormuz is the only lasting solution. Iran's foreign minister has said the country is targeting only Israeli and United States ships, claiming other vessels are still able to pass.
