Support for Israel among Americans has fallen sharply in recent years, driven largely by declining approval among Democrats and independents. A new national poll found that 32 percent of Americans view Israel positively, while 39 percent hold a negative view, a significant shift from three years ago when positive views outweighed negative ones by a wide margin.
Among Democrats, attitudes have changed most dramatically. Just 13 percent now view Israel positively, compared with 57 percent who see it negatively. Independents have also shifted toward more negative views. In contrast, Republicans remain largely supportive, with a majority continuing to express favorable opinions of Israel.
Americans are now nearly evenly split on whether they sympathize more with Israel or the Palestinians. Democrats and independents have moved strongly toward greater sympathy for the Palestinians, while Republicans remain overwhelmingly more sympathetic to Israel. The poll also highlights a generational divide, with younger Americans expressing more critical views of Israel amid the ongoing war in Gaza, which has resulted in more than 72,000 reported deaths according to Palestinian health officials.
