An investigation by the Associated Press found that an Israeli organization led by right-wing activist Gilad Ach quietly organized charter flights that evacuated hundreds of Palestinians from Gaza last year. The group, Ad Kan, worked through a company called Al-Majd, which describes itself as a humanitarian organization supporting Palestinian lives.
The flights included one in May that transported nearly 60 Palestinians to Indonesia and other destinations, as well as two flights in October and November that carried more than 300 people to South Africa. It remains unclear who planned or financed the operations. South Africa's foreign minister criticized the evacuations as part of a broader agenda to remove Palestinians from their land, prompting an investigation into at least one flight.
The revelations add to ongoing controversy over efforts to relocate Palestinians from Gaza. Some passengers said they paid up to 2,000 dollars per person and were primarily focused on escaping dire humanitarian conditions. Ach denied accusations that the evacuations amounted to ethnic cleansing and argued that other countries were unwilling to accept Palestinian refugees, while questions remain about whether Israeli authorities were involved in coordinating the departures.
