Authorities apprehended two antiquities looters at an archaeological site near the Elyakim Interchange, southeast of Haifa, where remains from the Roman and Byzantine periods have previously been uncovered. The site dates from the first century to the early seventh century.
Inspectors from the Israel Antiquities Authority, along with representatives from the Israel Nature and Parks Authority and local security personnel, responded to reports of illegal activity. They found the suspects digging a pit about two meters deep near what appeared to be an ancient agricultural installation, possibly an oil press, and detained them at the scene.
